In the Ungwan Maigero community of Chikun Local Government Area in Kaduna State, a 13-year-old boy named Wisdom Hashimu ended his life after being tortured.
Beyond Boders learned that the tragic event which happened on Thursday, June 7, had Wisdom accused of stealing 10,000 Naira from a neighbour, Hope, on June 1.
Hope’s boyfriend, Segun Samson, who is a soldier, was visiting from Bodi Camp in Port-Harcourt. When the money went missing, Hope asked Segun for help.
Segun and some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) took Wisdom and Hope’s brother to the JTF office. There, Wisdom was beaten very badly.
According to Wisdom’s father, Mr. Saul, the beating was so severe that Wisdom could not walk and needed medical care.
Despite the beating, Hope’s brother was not harmed. Later, he admitted to taking the money, as 9,000 Naira was found with him. He said he had spent 1,000 Naira.
On June 7, Wisdom’s body was found hanging in the family’s backyard. His father believes that the torture from the Civilian JTF led to Wisdom’s death.
“Beyond my wildest imagination, the Civilian JTF only beat Wisdom to the point of coma while Hope’s younger brother was spared and returned home unscathed,” Mr. Saul said.
The police have started an investigation. Mansir Hassan, the state police spokesperson, said that the Commissioner of Police has directed the Department of Criminal Investigation to handle the case and ensure justice is served.
