Fast-rising Nollywood star, Joan Johnson, has opened up about her life, career, and personal struggles.
In a candid interview with Beyond Boders, Joan, when asked how she balances her acting career with relationships, made an explosive claim: “It is difficult to combine acting and relationships because the men always have trust issues. Men always think it is not possible to be faithful and loyal in a relationship as an actress. They become toxic and over protective. They don’t appreciate good women and are never satisfied. Honestly, 90 percent of Nigeria men are gasliters!”
The Edo-born actress further described how past relationships have been full of mistrust and possessiveness, adding that many men are drawn to women they can exploit rather than value.
Also asked about scandalous rumours and her alleged ties to high-profile celebrities, she surprisingly brushed it off, denying them outrightly.
Her confidence in handling controversies has added to her reputation as a bold and fearless actress.
Speaking on the criticisms of Nollywood, Joan, with a sharp metaphor, stated, “You can force a pig to the city, but you can’t take the pig out of the pig.”
This response, while cryptic, highlights her belief that creativity in the industry depends on individual commitment rather than external pressure.
Surprisingly, Joan shared that she has never faced harassment or exploitation in Nollywood, a statement that some find refreshing and rare in a controversial industry.
She dreams of being one of the best and richest actresses in Nigeria. “I don’t know how God will do it, but I’ll keep pushing,” she said.
She also revealed her toughest role was playing a calm girl, which was a challenge because she is not naturally calm, but was able to deliver with determination.
On Netflix reportedly leaving Nigeria, Joan dismissed it as a rumour. She is confident that local and international investors will continue to support Nollywood, ensuring that the industry remains vibrant.
Joan offered words of encouragement to aspiring actors, stating, “Don’t give up. Never get tired of pushing.”
Her candidness and unapologetic views make her one of Nollywood’s rising stars to watch. Whether discussing relationships or industry challenges, she speaks her truth boldly and confidently.
