As the world celebrated Radio Day on February 13, 2024, Divine Onyinyechi James, popularly known as Tushbee, shed light on the unique hurdles confronting Nigerian radio broadcasters in today’s dynamic media environment.
In a conversation with Beyond Boders, Tushbee, a multifaceted personality encompassing radio hosting, acting, producing, and column writing, emphasized the demanding nature of the profession. She underscored the necessity for broadcasters to uphold accuracy, fairness, and impartiality despite time constraints and technological advancements.
“A radio presenter must remain mindful of the social and political responsibilities of the profession. This includes recognizing our responsibilities as well as informing, educating and entertaining the public, together with our obligation to contribute to a better society,” Tushbee articulated.
She accentuated radio’s pivotal role in addressing social issues like poverty, education, and healthcare, fostering awareness through campaigns and targeted programming.
Reflecting on the essence of World Radio Day’s theme, “Radio, a century informing, entertaining, and educating,” Tushbee underscored radio’s enduring impact on diverse cultures and communities worldwide.
Despite the proliferation of streaming services and podcasts, Tushbee expressed confidence in traditional radio’s resilience, citing its accessibility, affordability, and extensive reach, especially in remote areas.
“Radio has been very impactful globally because it is one of the widely consumed mediums at the global level hence, the radio has the ability to shape society and stands as a platform for voices to speak out, represent and be heard,” Tushbee remarked optimistically.
She highlighted radio’s democratic nature, its ability to transcend barriers, and its unparalleled reach to a broad spectrum of listeners, affirming its relevance for generations to come.
