Tems’ early years were steeped in a love for music. Raised in Lagos with brief stints in the UK during her formative years, the 29-year-old returned to Nigeria at the age of five amidst her parents’ separation.

In 2018, Tems made the bold decision to pursue music full-time, forsaking conventional career paths.

Drawing inspiration from online resources like YouTube, she taught herself production skills and released her debut single, “Mr Rebel,” in July 2018, showcasing her versatility as both a singer and producer.

Continuing to refine her craft, Tems garnered attention with singles like “Try Me,” released in August 2019, and collaborations with industry heavyweights such as Davido and Wizkid.

Her debut extended play, “For Broken Ears,” released in September 2020, marked a significant milestone, earning her critical acclaim and chart success.

In 2022, Tems made history with her collaboration with Future and Drake on the hit single “Wait for U,” becoming the first African female artiste to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her distinct sound and heartfelt lyrics have garnered her numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

Personal Life

Despite her success, Tems has faced challenges along her journey. In 2020, she encountered legal issues when she was arrested in Uganda for allegedly violating COVID-19 lockdown protocols.
