In a recent press conference held in Lagos, leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints declared their stance on same-sex relationships, affirming that while they uphold traditional marriage values, they do not discriminate against individuals attracted to the same sex.
At the gathering to welcome two church elders, Apostle David Bernard and Patrick Kearon, the Church emphasized its commitment to showing love and respect to all members, regardless of sexual orientation.
Elder Bernard reiterated the Church’s belief that marriage is intended for a man and a woman, yet emphasized the importance of treating those with same-sex attraction as equals.
“We do not discriminate against them. We counsel and encourage our members to be loving to all. But we formally declared that marriage is between man and woman,” Elder Bernard stated during the conference.
The Church, present in Nigeria since 1970, stressed the significance of dialogue and understanding across different faiths. Elder Kearon emphasized the importance of building trust through conversations and interactions between faith communities.

“Dialogue between faith and people brings understanding. And we are very willing to take part in the dialogue. We are very willing to hold dialogue with all faiths. My understanding is that it brings understanding and friendship,” Elder Kearon remarked.
He further added, “Lack of understanding leads to lack of trust. Conversation and dialogue lead to understanding, which brings trust. And we need trust in society. You will find us willing and eager to take part in dialogue with other faiths and other communities here in Nigeria.”
As the Church continues its presence in Nigeria, its leaders expressed their commitment to spreading love and kindness, mirroring the teachings of Jesus Christ in their interactions with others.
