Governments and security forces in South-Western states have increased security around government buildings and areas to prevent any chaos caused by groups pushing their own agendas.
Beyond Boders reports that the police and authorities have warned that they will take action against any insecurity.
They said anyone claiming to be part of the Yoruba Nation movement must choose peace or face consequences.
This warning comes after an incident on Saturday where Yoruba Nation supporters, wearing military-style clothes and carrying guns, tried to take over the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Ibadan. Security forces stopped them and arrested 20 people.
Similar incidents occurred in May 2023 when Yoruba Nation supporters took over a radio station in Ibadan.
Yoruba Nation supporters want the Yoruba people to separate from Nigeria, saying they would have a better life on their own.
The federal government opposes this idea; In 2021, they pursued Sunday Igboho, a leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, who later fled the country.
The recent attempt to take over the Oyo Government Secretariat caused fear among residents.
Other South-Western states like Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun are taking precautions to prevent similar incidents.
The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, ordered increased security around government buildings.
He called for unity in Nigeria, urging Yoruba Nation supporters to join efforts for federal reform.
Moreso, authorities in Ekiti State assured residents of safety, stating they have measures in place to maintain peace.
The police in Ogun State are on high alert, ready to prevent any disruptions, as they warn against using violence, promising to maintain law and order.
Similar assurances came from Ondo State officials and the Amotekun security agency, pledging to protect government assets and citizens.
Amidst these efforts, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, emphasized, “In Ekiti, we are not worried. Ekiti is safe and secure, we are peace-loving people and our people are not reckless.”
