Kano Assembly Moves to Change Law That Ousted Emir Sanusi

by Beyondboders

The Kano State House of Assembly has started changing the law that was used to dethrone the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi.

The decision came after Hussien Dala, the Majority Leader from the Dala constituency, proposed the change during a meeting on Tuesday.

In 2019, the law was first changed during a conflict between then-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Emir Sanusi.

This change split the Kano emirate into five parts: Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi, in addition to Kano, each with its own First Class Emir. This split eventually led to the removal of Emir Sanusi.

After Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf won the recent election, there have been many calls to bring back the old Kano Emirate system and reinstate Emir Sanusi.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), the ruling party in Kano, mentioned before Governor Yusuf took office that the issue of the emirates would be looked into.

He expressed hope that the new governor would continue their past good projects and address the emirate issue.

Kwankwaso stated, “We as elders in the movement will continue to advice them to do things that are proper. We tried not to talk about whether the Emir would be removed or not, but now you see, the opportunity is there.

“We are confident God will give the governor (Abba Kabir Yusuf) the wisdom to come and resolve the challenges planted in Kano state so that everyone will leave peacefully in Kano state.”
