ASUU Strike: UniAbuja Lecturers Ignore VC’s Order to Sign Attendance Register

by Beyondboders

Lecturers at the University of Abuja, who are part of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have decided not to follow the Vice Chancellor’s (VC) order to sign an attendance register.

Beyond Boders reports that the lecturers are on strike and will not sign the register to show they are working or have returned to classes.

The strike which began on May 2, 2024, had the lecturers protesting against problems like breaking university rules, improper staff appointments, and promotions made without a governing council.

In response to the strike, the VC, Professor Rasheed Na’Allah, asked all lecturers to sign a daily attendance register starting today, hoping that this will lessen the strike’s impact and help classes resume.

The VC announced on the university’s official Facebook page that the deadline for signing the attendance register is now extended to Monday, June 3, 2024.

He said, “Having considered the views and pleas of concerned members of the university community, management has agreed to extend the deadline, earlier given to staff to sign the attendance register, to indicate that he/she is teaching or has resumed teaching on Monday, 3rd June, 2024.”

It was also learned that staff who are away on sabbatical or other reasons, should email their deans and copy the registrar at registrar@uniabuja.edu.ng.

Deans must then send the compiled attendance list to the registrar by the end of Monday.

However, in an interview with newsmen yesterday, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, the head of UniAbuja ASUU, said that union members will not follow the VC’s directive and the strike will continue.

He stated that members are united and firm in their decision to continue the strike until their demands are met.
