Minimum Wage: Presidency Urges Patience, Assures Prompt Action

by Beyondboders

The Presidency has asked Nigerians to stay calm and not rush President Bola Tinubu over the new minimum wage request.

The government has promised that President Tinubu will send the wage proposal to the National Assembly after it is fully prepared.

Speaking with The Punch, Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, expressed confusion about the rush. “People should be patient,” he said, stressing the need for careful consideration before moving forward.

This comes a day after the Organised Labour called on President Tinubu to talk with them before sending the bill to the National Assembly.

The union is worried that the delay in sending the bill is stopping the National Executive Committee, which includes about 300 Labour leaders, from meeting.

In his Democracy Day speech, President Tinubu mentioned an agreement between the Federal Government and Labour on the new minimum wage. However, the Organised Labour disagreed, saying no such agreement existed.

Onanuga, unsure of when the bill will be submitted, repeated his call for patience, noting that the ₦250,000 minimum wage demanded by the workers’ union is too high, while warning that using all government resources to meet this demand is not possible.
