The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that the school building collapse in Plateau State on Friday was an avoidable tragedy.
Beyond Boders recalls that the Saints Academy in Jos collapsed on July 12 while students were taking their third term exams. The incident resulted in 22 deaths.
NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar, visited the school over the weekend and stated that the disaster could have been prevented by using professionals during construction.
“I decided to come myself because it is such a huge and avoidable loss. It is something that could have been totally avoidable. It is a lesson for all of us that we need to get all developers to adhere to building codes and the plans and ensure the right thing is done,” she said.
The Plateau State Government reported that 22 people died and 132 were injured in the collapse.
