Flood Displaces 1,664 Persons in Sokoto State

Floods have displaced 1,664 people in four communities in Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

As learned by Beyond Boders, the floods followed heavy rain on July 17, 2024.

According to Abdullahi Ghani, the Information Officer for the Sokoto Emergency Management Agency, the floods have left many people homeless and destroyed many hectares of farmland.

The floods also killed many sheep and goats. “The recent downpour which happened on July 17, 2024, left many residents of Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State homeless and displaced.

“It also destroyed several hectares of farmlands and resulted in the perish of a high number of sheep and goats,” Ghani said.

Ghani said the worst-hit communities are Dantudu, Balakozo, Gidan Tudu, and Tsitse, as 62 houses and 71 households were affected in Dantudu.

In Balakozo, 33 houses and 48 households were affected, 38 houses and 52 households were affected in Gidan Tudu, while 68 houses and 89 households were affected in Tsitse.

Nigeria has experienced severe floods in 2012, 2018, 2020, and 2022. The Federal Government has warned that 94 towns are at risk of flooding this year due to heavy rain.

The NGO, Safe and Better Nigeria, has called on the government to prepare better to reduce the impact of future floods.
