Plans are underway for the traditional Oro Festival in Lagos, set to begin on August 1, which seems to be timed to counter the #EndBadGovt protest.
Beyond Boders reports that a notice about the Oro Festival was shared on social media, informing residents and visitors that the event will take place from August 1 to August 15. This festival involves significant rituals in various communities.
“Please be informed that the Oro Festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from 1st of August to August 15. This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals,” the notice read.
The timing of the festival has raised suspicions because it coincides with the planned protest. However, the state government has denied any involvement in organizing the festival.
Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that both the protesters and the traditional worshippers have the right to carry out their activities. He advised both groups to respect each other’s rights to prevent any conflict.

Mr. Akosile emphasized that if the protest turns violent, security forces will be ready to maintain order.
In the past, the Oro Festival has coincided with significant events. For example, before the 2023 elections, rituals were observed in various parts of Lagos, leading to concerns that the festival was being used to influence voter turnout.
This year’s scheduling has again led to speculation about its true purpose, but the authorities maintain that it is merely a traditional event.
