Malpractice Scandal: WAEC Withholds Results of 215,267 Candidates

by Beyondboders

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has held back the results of 215,267 students who took the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

This action was taken due to reports of exam malpractice, Beyond Boders learned.

Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of the National Office, shared this information on Monday during the results announcement in Lagos.

He noted that the number of withheld results is 4.37% lower than last year’s 16.29%.

Dr. Dangut explained that these withheld results are linked to various cases of cheating during the exams.

He mentioned that the use of cell phones in exam halls, despite a ban, and organized cheating in some schools are ongoing issues.

WAEC is investigating these cases and will present the findings to a committee for a final decision. Thus, affected students will be informed of the decisions through their schools.

He also advised that any student who wants to challenge the decision can do so by visiting WAEC’s website.

Dr. Dangut further stated that WAEC will continue to punish all forms of exam cheating. He emphasized that schools, teachers, and students involved in these practices are harming the education system.

A total of 1,814,736 students from 25,126 recognized secondary schools registered for the exam. Out of these, 1,805,216 students actually took the exam, with 896,894 being male and 908,322 female.

Out of those who sat for the exam in Nigeria, 93.39% had their results fully processed and released, while the remaining 6.61% are still being processed due to some unresolved issues. WAEC is working to finalize these results in the coming days.

Dr. Dangut also provided a breakdown of the students’ performance. Of the 1,805,216 students who took the exam, 73.79% received credit in at least five subjects.

However, only 72.12% received credits in five subjects including English and Mathematics. This represents a 7.69% drop in performance compared to last year.

Special arrangements were made for 109,115 students with special needs, and their results were also processed and released.

Dr. Dangut mentioned some challenges WAEC faced during the exam, including security concerns, the “Sit-at-home” order in the Southeast, and an industrial strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

These issues posed a serious threat to the exams, but the public allowed the exams to go on.

He also highlighted the difficulty of managing late registrations and the financial challenges brought on by inflation. These factors, along with the rising cost and scarcity of fuel, made conducting the exams more challenging.

There were also cases of some supervisors colluding with rogue websites to cheat during the exams. WAEC is working with state education ministries to take appropriate action against those involved.

As the 2024 WASSCE results are uploaded, students can apply for their digital certificates, which will be available 48 hours after the results are checked.

For students sponsored by states that owe WAEC money, their results will not be released until the debts are paid.

The Result Checker PIN and Serial Number needed to view results online are on the students’ Smart Identity Cards used during the exam. Hard copies of the certificates will be ready within the next 90 days.
