A family in Southend is grieving after two devastating events happened just weeks apart.
On July 29, Michelle Hempstead, a 34-year-old mother of five, was attacked by dogs in her home.
Paramedics rushed her to Southend Hospital, and she was later transferred to the Royal London Hospital for further treatment. Sadly, she passed away from her injuries on July 30.
At the inquest opening this morning, Essex Coroners’ Court was informed about the tragic incident. Court coordinator Andy Flack shared that Michelle had suffered severe injuries from the attack.
Despite efforts to save her, she died from multiple organ failure, hypovolemic shock, and a dog bite wound on her arm.

Senior coroner Lincoln Brookes opened the inquest into Michelle’s death, but paused the proceedings to allow Essex Police to continue their investigation. He expressed his deepest condolences to Michelle’s family.
This tragedy comes just weeks after another heartbreaking loss for the family. Michelle’s firstborn daughter died suddenly on June 4 and was laid to rest on July 2.
A close friend, Liah Smith, shared how deeply the family is hurting, saying, “Michelle wasn’t just a mother to 5 beautiful children, she was a daughter, a friend, a neighbour, a big support system for the people around her, but undoubtedly the kindest soul to have crossed everyone’s paths. We are absolutely heartbroken by her absence and we’d like to do her justice by coming together as a community at this unfortunate time.”
