Labour to Storm Police Headquarters in Support of Ajaero Over Alleged Terrorism Charges

by Beyondboders

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is planning a major march to the Police Headquarters in Abuja this Thursday.

Beyond Boders reports that this move is to show support for their President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who has been called by the police for questioning over allegations of financing terrorism and other related crimes.

The police had originally summoned Ajaero to appear on August 20, 2024. However, the NLC requested more time to consult with their lawyers, and Ajaero is now set to meet with the police on August 29, 2024.

In response to this, the NLC has mobilized its members, particularly the Central Working Committee (CWC), to stand with Ajaero. A circular from the General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, urged all NLC affiliates and state councils to join in a peaceful march and prayer session.

“We urge all members to remain peaceful and orderly throughout the procession and prayer session. Together, we shall overcome these challenges and continue to uphold justice, fairness, and democracy in our dear nation,” Ugboaja stated.

In Abuja, CWC members will gather at the NLC National Headquarters by 8:00 AM on Thursday to accompany Ajaero to the Police Headquarters.

In state capitals, members are asked to meet at their respective state secretariats and then proceed to their State Police Headquarters for a peaceful march and prayer.

The NLC has made it clear that this march is a stand against what they see as an unjust and politically motivated action aimed at silencing the leadership of Nigerian workers. The group has warned that if Ajaero is detained, all workers across the country will go on an indefinite strike.

The NLC is determined to defend the rights of workers and protect the integrity of the labour movement. They are calling on all Nigerians to support this cause and stand up against any actions that threaten justice, fairness, and democracy in the country.
