Canada Stops Visitor-to-Work Permit Policy

by Beyondboders

Canada has ended a policy that allowed visitors to apply for work permits while inside the country.

The policy, introduced by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in August 2020, was aimed at helping visitors who could not leave Canada due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

The policy allowed visitors in Canada to apply for a work permit without having to leave, and gave those who had held a work permit in the last 12 months, but later changed their status to “visitor” the chance to apply for a new work permit and start working legally while waiting for a decision.

Originally set to expire in February 2025, the Canadian government has decided to end the policy early. The government explained that the change is part of a plan to better manage the number of temporary residents and maintain the immigration system’s integrity.

They also noted that some people were using the policy to mislead others into working in Canada without permission.
