The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is holding an emergency meeting today, September 2, 2024, over a fresh police summons for its President, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
NLC leaders are calling the summons an act of “intimidation” by the Nigeria Police Force.
Sources in the NLC say the meeting is important because the union will decide how to respond to this new challenge, which they see as an attempt to scare and weaken their leadership.
The police want to question Ajaero and Ugboaja about alleged criminal intimidation, disruption of public peace, and damage to property. The questioning is set for September 5, 2024, and will be led by CP Rufus Alajide of the Force Intelligence Department (FID).
Beyond Boders further gathered that NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah, criticized the police actions, saying they are a “clear case of harassment” aimed at silencing the labour movement.
Upah stated that the NLC is a responsible organization that always considers the welfare of the nation and its people.
He added that the repeated police summons and the recent raid on the NLC office are part of a deliberate effort by the state to target those who oppose them. Upah noted that the recent police actions clearly show an intention to intimidate.
“The organs will decide if they will be available. Some programmes have already been fixed,” Upah said, when asked if the union leaders would comply with the summons.
