Tyrese Haspil, 25, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for the murder of Fahim Saleh, 33, in New York City.
Saleh was the founder and CEO of Gokada, a transportation company in Nigeria.
Haspil, who was Saleh’s executive assistant, was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges. He killed Saleh to cover up his embezzlement of funds from the company.
Prosecutors say surveillance footage showed Haspil entering Saleh’s apartment building on July 13, 2020. Inside, Haspil used a taser and then stabbed Saleh multiple times. The next day, Haspil dismembered and decapitated Saleh’s body, placing the parts in construction bags.
Saleh’s cousin discovered the crime after not hearing from him for a day and alerted the police. Haspil was arrested four days later at an Airbnb where he was celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. said, “Today, Tyrese Haspil is facing accountability for brutally murdering and decapitating Fahim Saleh, a kind, generous, and empathetic person who positively impacted the world.
“Even after the defendant stole from him to fund a lavish lifestyle, Mr. Saleh still gave him a second chance. While today’s sentence won’t bring Mr. Saleh back, I hope it provides his family a sense of closure as they continue to mourn his painful loss.”
Haspil had been stealing from Saleh since 2018, setting up fake accounts and financial statements to hide his actions. The embezzlement totaled around $400,000. He had previously plotted to murder Saleh to prevent him from discovering the theft.
Gokada, founded by Saleh in 2017, was known for its ride-hailing, logistics, and food delivery services in Nigeria. The company praised Saleh’s commitment to helping young Nigerians and advancing technology.
