Born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, Taoreed Lagbaja spent his early years in Osogbo, Osun State, where he attended St. Charles Grammar School and later the Local Authority Teachers College.
Driven by a strong sense of duty, he was admitted to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1987, joining the 39th Regular Course. Lagbaja received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992.

To enhance his expertise, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Geography from NDA Kaduna and later a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the prestigious U.S. Army War College.
Military Career
Lagbaja’s career in the Nigerian Army spanned over three decades and included a wide range of command and operational roles.
Beginning as a platoon commander with the 93 Battalion, he moved to lead troops in the 72 Special Forces Battalion from 1995 to 2001.
Between 2001 and 2004, he served as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, further shaping future military leaders.
From 2006 to 2009, he was on the Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.
In 2009, Lagbaja became Deputy Chief of Staff G1 at Headquarters 81 Division, and by 2012, he led as Commanding Officer at 72 Special Forces Battalion in Makurdi.
His leadership extended to positions such as Chief of Staff at Headquarters 8 Task Force Division, Monguno, and Director of Operations at the Army Headquarters in 2018.
Notable operations he participated in include “Operation Harmony IV” in the Bakassi Peninsula, “UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC),” “Operation Zaki” in Benue, “Operation Lafiya Dole” against Boko Haram, “Operation Mesa/Udo Ka” in Southeast Nigeria, and “Operation Forest Sanity” targeting insurgents in Kaduna and Niger states. His efforts were instrumental in preserving national security across multiple regions.
Promoted to lieutenant general in July 2023, Lagbaja’s elevation symbolized his hard-earned respect in the Nigerian Army. His tenure as Chief of Army Staff was marked by operational oversight in key divisions, particularly the 1st and 82nd Divisions.
