A judge at the FCT High Court in Abuja, Justice Maryanne Anenih, angrily left the courtroom on Wednesday morning due to the disruptive behaviour of Yahaya Bello’s supporters.
The former Kogi State governor appeared in court for his arraignment alongside two others over alleged corruption charges.
The judge, upset by the noisy and overcrowded courtroom, said she would not return until order was restored. She instructed, “Anyone not connected to the case, including lawyers, should leave the courtroom.”
Shortly after Justice Anenih walked out, Mr. Bello took charge of the situation. From his front-row seat, he stood up and asked his supporters, who had filled the courtroom, to leave immediately. His calm but firm instructions eased the tension. One by one, his followers exited without resistance.
To ensure no one disobeyed, Mr. Bello positioned himself at the courtroom entrance, ensuring order was maintained. His aides and supporters followed his instructions without delay.

In court, Mr. Bello and his two co-defendants pleaded not guilty to 16 charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges involved allegations of diverting ₦110 billion from Kogi State funds during his time as governor.
Mr. Bello, who left office in January this year, spent Tuesday night in EFCC custody before arriving at the court on Wednesday morning. He entered the premises in an EFCC vehicle at about 8:50 a.m. and was escorted into the courtroom, where he sat close to the dock.
This marked Mr. Bello’s first court appearance after months of avoiding trial and ignoring summonses related to the corruption allegations.
The case continues as Kemi Pinheiro, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, leads the prosecution, while Joseph Daudu, another SAN, represents Mr. Bello in the legal proceedings.
