A tragic stampede at a children’s festive party on Wednesday morning in Ibadan, Oyo State, has left several children dead and many others injured. Agidigbo FM, a private radio station, has denied claims that it organized the event, instead identifying the WINGS Foundation, led by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, as the sponsor.
The incident happened at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, during what was meant to be a joyful Christmas party.
Witnesses say the crowd became uncontrollable, leading to a deadly stampede. Victims are being treated at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, while the exact number of casualties remains unclear.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the tragic event in a statement on social media.
He also revealed that the event organizers had been arrested, and investigations were underway to determine the cause of the disaster.
Agidigbo FM, which had promoted the event, issued a statement distancing itself from its organization.
According to the station’s Director of Programmes, Olayinka Abdul Wahab, Agidigbo FM only provided media support through advertisements and public announcements.
The station emphasized that upon learning of the crowd buildup as early as 5 a.m., they used public service messages to warn people against gathering at the venue.
Despite efforts by the event organizers, including deploying security and medical teams, the situation escalated into chaos.
“This a very sad day for us all, however, we call on the general public to shun the spread of fake news and contact Agidigbo FM, for more information.
“This is not the time to spread misinformation, the Management of Agidigbo FM, implores the general public to continue to pray for the speedy recovery of those in various hospitals and sympathise with the family of those who lost their lives,” the statement read.
The WINGS Foundation has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
