On Monday, the Lagos State House of Assembly voted to remove Speaker Mudashiru Obasa from his position. The lawmakers accused Mr. Obasa of several cases of financial and statutory misconduct.
Following his impeachment, Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda took over the role. Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the House’s chief whip.
The decision came shortly after reports emerged about Mr. Obasa’s involvement in the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for vehicles and other controversial actions. The news highlighted serious concerns about his financial dealings.
At the time of his impeachment, Mr. Obasa was reportedly in Atlanta. The 52-year-old had been serving as Speaker since June 8, 2015, under the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
Throughout his time in office, Mr. Obasa faced numerous allegations of fraud and involvement in political violence.
In 2020, investigations revealed that he diverted state funds to his private businesses and accounts.
Additionally, reports indicated he owned several properties across Lagos.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had called Mr. Obasa for questioning after multiple media outlets reported his alleged misuse of funds. Despite denying the accusations, no formal charges were brought against him after meeting with investigators.
