The Catholic Diocese of Warri in Delta State has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from his priestly duties due to his alleged secret marriage in the United States.
In a statement titled ‘Decree of Suspension,’ dated January 16, 2025, and shared with journalists in Warri, the church disclosed the suspension. The statement was signed by Bishop Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo.
According to the statement, “Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA.” This marriage reportedly became known after a video of the ceremony was widely shared on social media.
The church stated that by getting married, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had automatically incurred a suspension under Canon Law 1394 S1. Bishop Ewherido officially announced the suspension, barring Fr. Oghenerukevwe from performing any sacred duties.
“The Diocese mentioned that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had asked to be released from his priestly duties on November 30, 2024, but did not complete the required procedures before getting married.
By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension in accordance with the provisions of Canon 1394 S1, and I, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri, do hereby officially decree that he is suspended from the exercise of sacred ministry,” the statement explained.
The Diocese added that Fr. Oghenerukevwe could appeal for the suspension to be lifted or changed, but he must show a desire to reform.
“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation,” the statement concluded.
