In Abuja, a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, publicly apologized after a video surfaced showing him assaulting a Bolt driver who was delivering a package to his residence.
Ikwechegh admitted his actions were wrong and fell below the standards expected of a public servant.
On Monday, Ikwechegh addressed the incident, stating, “As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
He expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment his actions caused to the driver, his community, and the public.
Ikwechegh assured Nigerians that he is cooperating fully with the police investigation and has pledged to support efforts to ensure accountability.

“I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable.
“I also appreciate the swift condemnation of my actions by my party and the Nigerian Police, demonstrating our collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all citizens,” he said.
Additionally, Ikwechegh revealed that he is seeking counseling to prevent future incidents and plans to participate in community service projects promoting respect and empathy. He called on Nigerians to join him in building a society of respect and understanding.
The incident gained public attention after a video went viral, showing Ikwechegh slapping and insulting the driver, allegedly because the driver had requested that Ikwechegh come outside to collect the delivered package.
The lawmaker reportedly threatened the driver, saying he could make him “disappear” without facing consequences.
Following the backlash, Ikwechegh was summoned by the police at Maitama Divisional Headquarters for questioning.
The police also criticized the lawmaker for attempting to bring the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, into the incident.
The apology and commitment to cooperate with the police mark Ikwechegh’s attempt to address the situation, but public reactions continue to show widespread disapproval of his actions.
