A group of activists in London is planning a protest at King’s College London (KCL) to demand justice for Nigerian lawyer and human rights advocate, Dele Farotimi.
Beyond Boders reports that Farotimi is currently detained in Ekiti State, Nigeria, following a complaint by senior lawyer Afe Babalola, accusing him of defamation.
The protest, scheduled for December 10, aims to draw attention to what the activists describe as an unjust arrest and trial. The accusations against Farotimi stem from statements in his book, “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.”
Human rights activist Olawale Bakare, also known as Mandate, is urging people in London to join the protest.
Speaking online, Bakare called Babalola’s actions oppressive and emphasized the need for solidarity.
“Protecting free speech and standing up for one another are essential to building a better Nigeria. If you’re in London, join us at KCL on Tuesday to protest against Afe Babalola’s tyranny and demand the unconditional release of Dele Farotimi.
“A free Nigeria begins with protecting free speech and standing up for each other. Be there! #FreeDeleFarotimi,” Bakare said.
The protest is part of a wider campaign led by Omoyele Sowore and the Take It Back (TIB) Movement, which has declared December 10 as a day of global protests. Similar demonstrations will happen in Lagos, Abuja, and Ekiti State in Nigeria.
Reports suggest that King’s College London is also facing international criticism over its association with Afe Babalola.
Human rights groups and writers have asked the university to reconsider its ties with Babalola and return his donations.
The event at KCL is expected to highlight the global call for justice and the importance of protecting free expression in Nigeria.
