The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians about a recalled Nivea deodorant.
The specific product is the Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-On, 50ml, which is marketed to provide 48-hour protection suitable for African climates. This recall comes after a warning from the European Union Rapid Alert System in Brussels.
In an announcement on Thursday, NAFDAC revealed that the product has batch number 93529610.
NAFDAC explained that this batch contains a chemical, 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, which is banned in cosmetics due to health risks.
“The recalled Nivea product is reported to contain 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, a chemical prohibited in cosmetic products due to its potential to cause harm to the reproductive system, impair the health of an unborn child, and cause skin irritation and burns to users,” NAFDAC stated.
The recalled deodorant is produced in Germany and has the Bar Code Number 42299882.
NAFDAC urged all importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to avoid bringing, selling, or using this specific Nivea Roll-On deodorant batch.
Consumers with the affected batch should stop using it immediately and return it to a nearby NAFDAC office.
NAFDAC also encourages healthcare workers and consumers to report any problems linked to this or any regulated products.
Reports can be submitted to the nearest NAFDAC office, through email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, via their website www.nafdac.gov.ng, or by using the Med-safety app on Android or iOS.
