Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has won the state’s governorship election held last Saturday.
He secured 366,781 votes, defeating his closest rival, Hon. Agboola Ajayi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 117,845 votes.
This victory is seen as a huge defeat for Ajayi, marking the largest electoral loss in Ondo’s history since its creation in 1976.
Aiyedatiwa, who hails from the small riverine community of Obenla, has made history as the first person from such a community to become governor of Ondo State.
Prince Adeyemi Nejo, the candidate from the African Democratic Congress, came third with only 4,138 votes.

The total number of accredited voters was 508,963, with 12,896 votes rejected. In total, 497,077 valid votes were cast.
Prof. Akinwumi Olayemi Durotimi, the Returning Officer from the Federal University, Lokoja, confirmed Aiyedatiwa as the winner, stating that he received the highest number of votes and met all the necessary constitutional requirements.
Aiyedatiwa’s victory was anticipated, but the wide margin of his win surprised many. He is set to begin his fresh term as governor in February next year.
Many political observers noted that Aiyedatiwa’s easy win was due to the refusal of several key PDP leaders to support Ajayi, with some even choosing to back Aiyedatiwa in what was seen as a “payback” for Ajayi’s departure from the party.
