by Beyondboders

A sad event happened during the New Year’s Mass on January 1, 2025, in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.

A Catholic priest reportedly shot and killed a boy after the boy set off firecrackers, also known as knockouts, inside the church compound.

The shocking incident has caused widespread anger and sorrow, especially on social media. Many people are asking questions about what really happened. The names of the priest and the boy have not been confirmed yet. Efforts to find out more details about the parish and those involved are ongoing.

According to reports shared on a Facebook page called “For The Love of Anambra,” eyewitnesses claimed that the priest became angry after the boy lit the firecrackers. The priest allegedly took a gun and shot the boy, killing him instantly.

This action has left the community in pain and confusion, with calls for justice and answers about the tragedy.

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, said a full investigation has started. “We have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident,” Okoye stated.

The community in Amaimo is still in shock. Many residents and church members are struggling to understand how such a tragic event could happen during what should have been a joyful celebration.

This case has raised concerns about the use of firearms, the role of religious leaders, and how to handle conflicts peacefully. Some people are asking why a gun was present in a church and are calling for stricter rules to prevent such events in the future.

As the police investigation continues, there are also calls for the Catholic Church to conduct its own inquiry. This would help determine if the priest acted against church rules and whether more could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

Advocacy groups and human rights organizations have joined the conversation, demanding justice for the boy and his family.

They are also using this incident to talk about the dangers of gun misuse and the importance of better conflict resolution methods in sensitive places like churches.

The Amaimo community continues to mourn as they wait for updates from the investigation. Many are hoping for transparency and accountability in handling this tragic case.
