The Lagos State Government has reported a rise in deaths and infections due to the cholera outbreak.
Beyond Boders gathered that deaths have increased from 15 to 21, while the number of infections has gone up from 350 to 401.
Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, mentioned that the increase was expected following the large gatherings during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
This information was shared by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, the Director of Public Affairs in the state’s Ministry of Health.
Ms. Ogunyemi stated that the highest numbers of infections are in Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa.
However, she noted that suspected cases are starting to decrease in many areas due to the government’s efforts and monitoring.
The update came after Ms. Ogunyemi met with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre. She explained that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), is testing water sources, food, and beverages to find the contamination source.
“We have also intensified our surveillance activities in communities, particularly in affected local government areas, to address the situation head-on.
“We are also working with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as well as the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure all precautions are taken in our schools to protect children and scholars as they return,” Ms. Ogunyemi said.
She urged residents to stay alert, practise good hand hygiene, and participate in community cleanliness activities to help stop the spread of cholera.
