The Edo State Government has postponed the resumption of all schools indefinitely because of the rising petrol prices and the difficulties this has caused for parents and guardians.
Schools across many parts of Nigeria were expected to resume on Monday, September 9. However, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, it was announced that all public and private schools in Edo State would remain closed “until further notice.”
The statement explained that the government decided to keep schools closed because of the stress caused by the recent petrol price hike and the struggles faced by parents and guardians.
The government also advised parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely watch over their children during this period.
Recently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of petrol to ₦897 per litre at its retail stations, leading to long queues at filling stations.
Independent marketers have also increased their prices to above ₦900 per litre, with black market rates going over ₦1,000 per litre.
