The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken the international passport of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, following his recent arrest over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Beyond Boders recalls that Okowa was detained on November 4, 2024, by the EFCC, accused of diverting N1.3 trillion in derivation funds between 2015 and 2023.
He also allegedly invested N40 billion to acquire shares in a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) company and bought additional bank shares.
Sources within the EFCC said Okowa was questioned at the agency’s office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and later released on bail.
A source explained that Okowa’s release required him to surrender his passport to prevent him from leaving the country during the investigation.

“Okowa is no longer in our custody. He was released last Wednesday after meeting his bail conditions, which include depositing his travel documents with the commission, pending the conclusion of our investigations of the allegations against him,” the source noted.
Attempts to contact the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, for comments were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered.
In a public statement, Okowa denied the accusations, calling the N1.3 trillion misappropriation claim “ridiculous.” He shared this view during a meeting with the Urhobo Progress Union, stating, “To successfully take N1.3tn, it means you have to be taking between N16bn and N20bn every month into your pocket. I don’t even know if the President of this country will be able to do that, not to talk of the governor of Delta State.”
Okowa expressed confidence that he would be cleared, adding that he supports Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and plans to continue working to develop the state.
