Parents of young people arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests have gathered at the Kano State House of Assembly to ask for their children’s release.
Malam Nura Ahmad, speaking for the parents, said that about 70 youths were arrested and taken to Abuja. He added that the youths were being treated harshly.
The protests happened from August 1 to August 10 across Nigeria to complain about the hard times under the current government.
Ahmad shared that the youths had not been allowed to bathe since they were arrested and were only given one meal a day.
The parents are frustrated as they have not been able to get bail for their children. They said their efforts to do so have been blocked.
The parents also reported that the youths do not have access to lawyers, making their situation worse.
Fatima Yusuf Umar, a mother of one of the detainees, said her son told her that he was having trouble seeing due to the bad treatment he was getting.
The Majority Leader of the Kano State Assembly met with the parents and promised to help the youths get bail.
He also called on the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice to step in and ensure the youths are granted bail.
