In a move aimed at easing travel expenses during the festive season, President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for a 50% reduction in the cost of interstate transport across Nigeria.
As learned by Beyond Boders, this reduction will be in effect from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.
Additionally, commuters are in for a treat as the President has approved complimentary rides for all train services during this period.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, who shared the details with State House Correspondents at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday.
Alake stated, “This special presidential intervention will commence tomorrow, Thursday, December 21 and it will end on January 4, 2024.
“The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, will be working with transporters, road transport unions, the Nigerian Railway Corporation to seamlessly deliver on this special presidential initiative.”
He reassured the public that the Federal Government, in collaboration with transportation authorities and unions, is committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of this special initiative.
Furthermore, Alake emphasized that relevant stakeholders, including transport unions and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, have been actively involved and are well-prepared for the execution.
However, it is important to note that air travel is not part of this initiative. Alake clarified, “The initiative is for the masses. Air is luxury. The masses don’t use air transport. So they are our main target.”
