MTN Nigeria has apologised to its customers following complaints about a sudden 200% increase in the price of its 15GB data bundle.
The new price requires customers to pay N6,000 for a 15GB weekly plan, instead of the previous N2,000. This sudden change surprised many users and led to widespread anger on social media.
In a message shared online on Thursday, MTN admitted that the price hike was a mistake. The company acknowledged the frustration of its customers and apologised in a casual tone.
MTN’s message read: “To our 15G digital bundle lovers. You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle.
“We could share several reasons, and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”
Currently, MTN is the only telecom company that has raised prices. However, Airtel and Globacom may also increase their rates after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% tariff increase in January.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the price hike and has called for an immediate reversal.
