Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, has been killed in an attack in Tehran, Iran.
The assassination happened while he was in the city for the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Iran’s state media, Press TV, reported the killing early on Wednesday, July 31. The attack was confirmed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Haniyeh’s bodyguard was also killed in the attack.
Hamas released a statement saying that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli raid at his residence after attending the inauguration.
Details about the killing are still unclear, and the situation is developing.
Earlier this year, it was reported that three of Haniyeh’s sons and four of his grandchildren were killed in Israeli airstrikes.
Israel has previously vowed to target Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders after the October 7th attack on Israel.
Just last week, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
