Angie Stone, a famous R&B singer who was nominated for a Grammy, has died at the age of 63. She passed away after a serious car crash in Alabama, her daughter confirmed.
“My mommy is gone,” her daughter, Diamond Stone, wrote in a Facebook post.
Reports say the accident happened early Saturday. Stone was traveling in a van after a performance when the vehicle overturned.
Guy Todd Williams, also known as Rahiem from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, said there were about nine other people in the van. However, Stone was the only one who lost her life.
A spokesperson for her family said loved ones had traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, and would share more details later.
Angie Stone was known for hit songs like “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.” She was nominated for a Grammy three times.
She started her music career in the 1970s with “The Sequence,” one of the first female hip-hop groups. Their song “Funk You Up” became very popular and is considered an important part of early hip-hop history.
Aside from music, Stone also acted in movies. She appeared in “The Hot Chick” (2002) and “The Fighting Temptations (2003),” where she acted alongside Beyoncé and Cuba Gooding Jr.
Stone’s daughter, who is also a musician known as Ladi Diamond, shared her pain on Facebook, saying she felt “numb.” Hours before the crash, she had asked people to pray for her family.
Many fans and fellow musicians are mourning her death. “She left her indelible mark on the music industry initially as a member of the legendary rap group Sequence,” Williams said.
