Winnie Khumalo, a celebrated South African singer and actress, has passed away at the age of 51. Her family confirmed that she died on Tuesday after a brief illness.
Family spokesperson Tshephi Rakeepile shared the family’s sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened as a family to announce the death of our dearly beloved sister, a mother, our friend, she passed away after a short illness and as a family at this stage we are deeply saddened.”
Khumalo was the mother of singer Rethabile Khumalo and Thabo Khumalo, son of the late boxing champion Digaan Thobela.
She passed away on the way to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The exact cause of her death is not yet known, and the family is devastated by the loss.
Winnie Khumalo was born in Mofolo, Soweto, and started her music career at 15. Her debut album, “Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina,” was produced by Sello Chicco Twala.
In the 1980s, she released a gospel album, “Dlamini,” followed by another gospel album, “Izoni Zami,” in the 1990s.
Khumalo worked with renowned artistes like Brenda Fassie, Pure Magic Sipho Mbele, and Brothers of Peace (B.O.P).
She also appeared on TV shows like “Mponeng” and “Muvhango,” and acted in stage plays such as “The Journey” and the film “Madluphuthu.”
After a break from music to raise her children, Khumalo returned in 2008 with the album “I Just Wanna Live My Life,” produced by Kalawa Jazzmee Records. The album was a success, earning a gold record and topping music charts.
Khumalo’s music continued to thrive with hits like “Mina Ngiyohlala Nginje,” and she performed during the 2009 ANC election campaigns with former President Jacob Zuma.
Following her death, tributes have poured in from fans and the public, honouring her legacy and impact on the music industry.
Khumalo leaves behind three grandchildren and an extended family who are mourning her passing.
