Popular music executive, Banky W, recently spoke about the early days of Nigerian music star, Wizkid, and the challenges he faced before rising to fame.
Banky W described Wizkid as a “studio rat” during his journey to becoming a global sensation.
In a video widely shared on social media, Banky W recalled how Wizkid would spend hours at various music studios, unable to afford recording sessions.
According to Banky W, who helped launch Wizkid’s career through his record label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), the young artiste would wait in studios all day, hoping for a chance to record.
“He was a studio rat as he will go to any studio where they will let him hang out and he will hang out all day waiting, hoping and praying that engineers and producers to just pity him and say oya, come and record for 15 or 30 mins because he could not pay for his session.”

Wizkid would use this time to practise hooks and melodies, making sure he was always ready to perform if given a moment at the microphone.
This process, Banky W explained, helped Wizkid become one of the fastest songwriters, able to come up with melodies and lyrics quickly. “That is where the name ‘Wiz’ started from,” said Banky W.
Today, Wizkid is known worldwide for his unique sound and impressive talent, with millions of fans singing his songs.
