Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), has decided to drop all criminal charges against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi. This follows the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional leaders.
Babalola made the announcement on Sunday, saying that after listening to the Ooni and other respected figures, he agreed to withdraw the charges. Farotimi had published a book called “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,” where he accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary.
Speaking to reporters, Babalola explained that he felt it was important to respect the wishes of traditional leaders. He said that the words of an Oba are like commands in the Yoruba culture, which left him with no choice but to follow their guidance.
Babalola also expressed that he had no personal interest in Farotimi’s punishment. He said, “I have nothing to gain from his imprisonment. I am happy each time I give.”
The Ooni had earlier asked Babalola to consider the efforts of many influential people who had stepped in to resolve the issue. The Ooni praised Babalola for his contributions to the Yoruba people and the nation. He added that Babalola’s name and reputation were important, and no one should try to destroy what he had worked hard to build.
The Ooni also emphasized forgiveness, saying, “We give birth to different children in this world and as elders when our children offend us as Yoruba after a little spank, we also pardon such children.”
While the case against Farotimi has been dropped, some lawyers involved in the matter still plan to pursue their own legal actions. These lawyers, who were also mentioned in Farotimi’s book, have expressed their intention to meet soon to discuss how they will move forward.
