The Nigerian Presidency has said that news reports about the removal of INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, are not true.
On Monday morning, social media was filled with claims that President Bola Tinubu had sacked Professor Yakubu and replaced him with another person called Professor Bashiru Olamilekan. The report described it as a major change in the leadership of the electoral body.
However, the President’s Senior Special Adviser on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, said the story is “fake” and people should ignore it.
“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra wrote in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
He explained that if such a decision was made, it would only be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) or another official government source.
So far, no official statement has come from the Presidency or any federal agency to support the claim. The story is now being seen as false information shared on social media.
