London influencer Suellen Carey, known for her unique choice to marry herself, has decided to end her self-marriage after just one year.
Suellen, who practices “sologamy,” the act of marrying oneself, explained that the commitment became too exhausting.
Suellen first caught global attention when she married herself last year, but now she says it is time for a change.
“I realised that self-analysis and reflection is essential. It’s crucial to know when to end a cycle. Even commitment to oneself can have its challenges, such as dealing with the expectation of being perfect for yourself all the time,” Suellen told The Mirror on August 30th.
The 36-year-old, originally from Brazil but now living in London, shared that she even tried couple’s therapy with herself to make the marriage work. However, she found that sometimes, she felt lonely in her solo relationship.

“I realised I was putting a lot of pressure on myself and that sometimes left me exhausted. I understood that even in a marriage with ourselves, it’s important to accept our imperfections,” she said.
After ten therapy sessions, Suellen decided that divorcing herself was the best option. Despite the decision, Suellen, who also performs as a Mariah Carey impersonator, has no regrets about her journey of self-marriage.
“My sologamous marriage was a process of healing and self-discovery, but I also understood that personal growth can lead us in different directions,” she shared.
Looking forward, Suellen is open to new experiences, including the possibility of a traditional monogamous relationship.
“I’ve decided that now is the time to open my heart to new possibilities, including the chance to find a partner,” she added.
Reflecting on her experience, Suellen explained that the self-marriage helped her discover what she truly wanted in life. In September 2023, she posted on Instagram, saying, “I value and love myself, I married myself here in London. This celebration is important because I learned to prioritize my well-being and mental health.”
“This is one of the happiest days of my life, I am grateful and very happy. I hope to inspire other people here too,” she concluded.
