The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced that everyone in the South-East should stay home on May 30 to honour “Biafra Heroes Day.”
Beyond Boders reports that this day is meant to remember those who died in the Biafra civil war from 1967 to 1970.
IPOB has asked the West African Examination Council and Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka to reschedule any events planned for May 30, as they want the day to be free for people to remember and honour Biafran heroes.
Emma Powerful, the spokesperson for IPOB, emphasized that it is important to remember those who fought for Biafra’s freedom.
He said no one should face any trouble from the government or security forces on this day.
Powerful also said that all social activities in Biafra Land are banned on May 30 thus, markets, schools, banks, and businesses, both government and private, should remain closed, as the lockdown will last from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In his statement, Powerful reminded everyone in Biafra territory to stay at home on May 30, stressing that this order is only for one day, while asking everyone to respect it.
“We oblige everyone to abide by this order, it’s only one day. The remembrance of all those who fought for Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty remains imperative,” he said.
He further called on the state governors to ensure safety on that day. Students taking WAEC exams should wear their school uniforms to identify themselves.
He clarified that IPOB is not involved in any criminal activities and supports students taking their exams.
Powerful urged the Federal Government to understand the importance of remembering their heroes, as those who died in the 1967-1970 war should be honoured and celebrated.
The statement also mentioned remembering Biafran heroes like Bruce Mayrock from the USA and other key figures such as General Phillip Efiong and Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
IPOB asked Biafrans living abroad to get permits for rallies in their countries to tell the world about the Biafran war and the strength of Biafran heroes. They emphasized that the fight for Biafra’s freedom will continue and that their determination remains strong.
