Israel Marks One Year Since Deadly October 7 Hamas Attack

by Beyondboders

Israel has begun remembering the tragic October 7 attack by Hamas from one year ago.

On Monday, many gathered at massacre sites for vigils, while rallies were held demanding the return of hostages taken during the attack.

Ceremonies were held in Israel and other cities across the world to mark the day. The attack, carried out by Palestinian militants from Gaza, killed 1,205 people.

Early in the morning, Israeli President Isaac Herzog led a moment of silence at Kibbutz Reim, the location of the Nova music festival, where 370 people were killed by heavily armed Hamas fighters.

Families who lost loved ones attended the memorials. In Tel Aviv, families of hostages and their supporters held rallies, asking for the release of their relatives still in captivity.

On Sunday, people around the world attended events, some honouring the victims and others showing support for the Palestinian people after a year of conflict in Gaza.

Israel is still at war in Gaza and is also fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon. The situation in the region remains tense, with fears of a larger conflict. The Israeli army reported that projectiles were fired from Gaza just as commemorations began.

Hamas claims it launched rockets at targets near the Gaza border, while sirens sounded in northern Israel, indicating rocket fire from Lebanon.

The Israeli government has pledged to continue its military campaign and to bring home all hostages. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised victory, stating that Israel’s military response has changed the situation in the region since the attack.

“A year ago, we suffered a terrible blow. Over the past 12 months, we have completely transformed reality,” he said.

The ongoing conflict has caused widespread destruction in Gaza, with many people losing their homes and lives. Thousands have fled from northern Gaza, and the Israeli military says its campaign is far from over.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah and Iran continue to make threats against Israel, keeping tensions high in the region. People on the ground in both Gaza and Lebanon are hoping for an end to the violence.
