John Amos, famous for his role as the father on the TV show “Good Times,” has died at the age of 84.

He passed away on August 21 in Los Angeles due to natural causes, as confirmed by his son, K.C. Amos.

K.C. shared a touching message about his father, saying, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” he said in a statement. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold … and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

John Amos had a rich career that began after playing football at Colorado State University. He initially tried out for professional teams like the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs but eventually shifted to show business.

He gained fame on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” before becoming even more well-known for his Emmy-nominated role as Kunta Kinte in the TV series “Roots.”

He also had memorable roles on shows like “The West Wing” and in movies such as “Coming to America.”

Amos’s career in TV took off when he was cast as James Evans Sr., the father on “Good Times.” Though he played the role for three seasons, he became upset with the show’s focus on stereotypes, especially the character of J.J., played by Jimmie Walker. He spoke out about these issues and was eventually let go from the series.

John Amos was born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey. His father worked as a truck driver and mechanic, while his mother was a housekeeper who later became a nutritionist.

His early love for entertainment began when he attended a radio show taping in New York City as a child, sparking his interest in acting and storytelling.

In addition to his TV and film roles, Amos wrote and starred in a one-man play, “Halley’s Comet,” which he performed for over 20 years across the U.S. and abroad.

Amos is survived by his son, K.C., and daughter, Shannon, from his first marriage to Noel Mickelson.
