JUST IN: El-Rufai Sues Kaduna Assembly Over N432bn Allegations

by Beyondboders

Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai has taken legal action against the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

He claimed the Assembly falsely accused his administration of misusing N432 billion and leaving the state in heavy debt.

On Wednesday, El-Rufai filed a case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, arguing that the Assembly’s investigation did not give him a fair chance to defend himself.

His media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, shared this news on social media. The lawsuit, filed by his lawyer, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, challenged the Assembly’s report, which accused El-Rufai of corruption.

Adekeye explained that El-Rufai sought justice as a citizen who deserves a fair hearing. He argued that the Assembly’s actions violated the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

He also stated that “El-Rufai asked the court to declare that by the provisions of Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, the Report of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Investigation of Loans, Financial Transactions, Contractual Liabilities and Other Related Matters of the Government of Kaduna State from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023, as ratified by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, is unconstitutional and therefore null and void for violating his right to fair hearing as guaranteed under the Constitution.”

Beyond Boders recalls that earlier in June, the Assembly’s ad hoc committee, led by Henry Zacharia, reported that loans taken during El-Rufai’s tenure were often misused, and proper procedures were not followed.

Assembly Speaker, Yusuf Liman, claimed that El-Rufai’s administration mismanaged N423 billion, causing serious financial problems for the state.
