The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries are currently undergoing extensive repairs to meet world-class standards.
NNPC Ltd. clarified that the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries is not the usual Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) but a complete overhaul aimed at achieving global benchmarks.
This was revealed in a statement on Thursday by Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., in response to comments made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo about the refineries’ operations.
Beyond Boders recalls that former President Obasanjo had earlier questioned the effectiveness of the work done on the 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and Warri Refinery. He claimed that Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) had previously advised against the viability of the Port Harcourt Refinery due to corruption.
Obasanjo also suggested that NNPC Ltd. had misled Nigerians about the refineries being operational.
Soneye emphasized that NNPC Ltd. has successfully overhauled the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries and is now focusing on similar repairs at the second Port Harcourt Refinery and Kaduna Refinery. He assured Nigerians that the company is committed to maintaining the refineries at a global standard for long-term operations.
Soneye invited Obasanjo to visit the refineries and see the progress made so far. He expressed deep respect for the former president’s experience and welcomed his insights.
“We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a respected statesman who has made significant contributions to the growth and progress of Nigeria,” Soneye said.
Soneye also highlighted the transformation of NNPC into NNPC Limited, a profit-driven private entity that now operates as a global energy leader. The company has expanded its focus beyond oil and gas to include sustainable energy solutions to meet Nigeria’s growing needs.
He attributed this progress to the leadership of NNPC’s board, led by Group CEO Mele Kyari, and the energy policies of President Bola Tinubu.
NNPC Ltd. assured Nigerians that it remains dedicated to delivering sustainable energy solutions while improving the nation’s refinery operations.
