Kenyan runner Edwin Kibet Koech has won the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, making it his second victory after winning in 2023.
Kibet finished the race in 2 hours and 14 minutes, securing the first-place prize of $50,000.
The 2025 Lagos City Marathon, held on Saturday, had about 37,000 participants competing in both the 10km and 42km races.
The event started at 6:30 am from the National Stadium in Surulere, while the 10km race began at 9:30 am from Lekki. Both races ended at Eko Atlantic City.
Yusuf Ali, the General Manager of the marathon and a retired Nigerian long jumper, said the number of participants was based on the running kits distributed from over 60,000 registered runners.
This year marks the 10th edition of the Lagos City Marathon, which began in 2016. The race currently holds a World Athletics gold label, and organizers are working towards achieving a platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to reach that level.
Ahead of the marathon, the Lagos State Government had announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion from 5 am to 1 pm along key routes to ensure a smooth event.
