The Agege Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos has stopped school food vendors from selling food to help stop the spread of cholera.
On June 11, Akin Abayomi, the Lagos Commissioner for Health, reported that five people died, and around 60 residents were hospitalized due to a suspected cholera outbreak in parts of the city.
By June 15, the commissioner confirmed the cholera outbreak, stating there were 350 suspected cases, 17 confirmed cases, and 15 deaths.
Beyond Boders further reports that as of Thursday, cholera-related deaths in the state had increased to 24.
Ganiyu Egunjobi, chairman of Agege LGA, announced that the council is working hard to inform the public about preventing the spread of cholera.

Egunjobi said that market vendors and schools have been informed via radio about how to take precautions against cholera.
“We have suspended all school food vendors to ensure the safety of the pupils and students. We have informed both the pupils and students on radio stations to come with their foods to ensure their safety from the cholera disease,” he said.
He added, “This development will allow us to detect and prevent outbreaks in our community. We are working tirelessly to prevent the menace of cholera outbreaks in our community.

Egunjobi also mentioned that they are talking to people through landlord associations and other groups about keeping food and drinks clean.
“We ask residents to learn and follow safety measures to protect themselves from cholera,” he urged.
