Sule Lamido, a leader in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged push for another Northern candidate as Nigeria’s next president.
Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, Lamido said that Buhari’s decision did not align with the current political situation.
Buhari, who is from Daura in Katsina State, served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023. He handed over to the current president, Bola Tinubu, who is from the Western part of the country.
“You have done eight years for the North and you wanted another Northerner for another eight years? No! Maybe later but there are some dynamics which you can not alter, not in Nigeria of today,” Lamido said.
Lamido added that Buhari, after eight years in office, was unable to support his chosen candidate. He was present at the party convention, but Tinubu, who was not his preferred choice, won.
Tinubu understands that his victory was not due to Buhari’s support, so he feels no obligation to him.
“He was not the choice of Afenifere, Obasanjo never liked him, but he became the president. All the other groups, including the governors, were there but he won. He was determined to demolish all obstacles and he crushed them,” Lamido continued.
Lamido also mentioned that the crisis within the PDP is not unique to the party, but is common across the country.
“The PDP is a Nigerian phenomenon and run by the Nigerian people, not by angels from heaven and, therefore, it is the same spirit whether in the APC or the PDP. Even if you go to the APC, the people you find there are all PDP,” he added.
