Farouk Lawan, a former lawmaker in House of Representatives, has been released from Kuje Prison in Abuja.
Beyond Boders reports that he completed his prison sentence and is now free.
In a statement on Tuesday, Lawan expressed his gratitude for being released. He said, “Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah. Today marks the start of a new chapter in my life as I leave Kuje Custodial Centre. I am immensely thankful to Allah SWT for guiding me through this trial.”
Lawan was once the Chairman of a special committee on the fuel subsidy in the House of Representatives. He was taken to court in 2013 for allegedly asking for a $3 million bribe from businessman Femi Otedola.
Otedola accused Lawan of accepting $500,000 to remove his company’s name from a list of companies involved in the 2012 fuel subsidy scandal.
Although Lawan appealed the case, saying the charges were not proven, he was found guilty by the court. He received a seven-year prison sentence, which was later reduced to five years by the Court of Appeal.
Now that he has finished his sentence, Lawan is starting a new chapter in his life.
